View-Through Conversions: Windows, Platform Rules and Measurement

A view-through conversion (VTC) is an outcome attributed to an eligible ad impression without the qualifying click or interaction that would place it in another attribution category. It helps you investigate exposure before a purchase. It does not establish that the purchase would have disappeared without the ad.

Keep three numbers separate: conversions attributed to clicks, conversions attributed to impressions, and actual orders. Increasing a reporting window can increase attributed conversions without improving the campaign.

Do not combine it with ordinary impressions

A person can see an ad, return through organic search and purchase. The ad platform may attribute a VTC while web analytics records an organic-search visit. Those reports describe different relationships; their totals are not interchangeable.

Compare the platform rules before comparing results

This table focuses on website outcomes. App measurement and specific campaign types can have additional rules.

Window and eligibility checks

Where to investigate

Google Ads

The usual default VTC window is one day; eligible actions support changes. Check interaction precedence

Goals → Conversions → Summary → the action’s settings; add the VTC reporting column

LINE Yahoo Display Ads, Japan

An eligible view requires at least half the ad to be visible for a continuous second. The window is fixed at 24 hours

View-through conversion metrics, separate from the ordinary conversion count

Meta Ads

Check the view, link-click and engagement categories and the windows available for the selected ad set

Ad-set attribution settings and Ads Manager reporting or comparison columns

Google generally reports VTCs separately from its main Conversions column, but supported VTC optimization campaigns have exceptions. Check the campaign’s actual reporting treatment rather than assuming every account follows one rule.

Meta announced changes to link-click and engagement attribution in March 2026, including the move toward the term engage-through. Do not assume an older video-only definition or a seven-day view option still describes the selected campaign. Record its current settings alongside your report.

A repeatable setup checklist

  1. Define one outcome: a purchase, qualified inquiry or completed registration.
  2. Record the attribution window, timezone, reporting date basis and campaign type.
  3. Check the underlying conversion event for missing or duplicate collection.
  4. Keep a dated log of attribution changes. Do not present a window change as performance growth.

Choose a window to support a documented business question. Where the platform supports window comparisons, examine the difference between shorter and longer periods. The difference remains attributed outcomes, not proven additional demand.

Why 20 plus 15 does not establish 35 additional sales

Consider this hypothetical report. Your order system contains 100 orders. Platform A reports 20 VTCs and platform B reports 15. Some purchasers may have seen both ads.

Overlap unknown; not incremental orders

Putting reports into one dashboard does not automatically deduplicate platform attribution. Reconcile order identifiers where supported and appropriate, and explicitly retain an unknown-overlap category where reconciliation is impossible. Avoid putting personal information into analytics URLs or event parameters.

Use VTCs to form a testable hypothesis

Compare exposure reporting with actual new customers, revenue and contribution margin. Separate prospecting from retargeting: the latter can reach people who were already likely to purchase. Review reach and frequency as well as attributed outcomes.

For a causal answer, consider a lift experiment with an eligible comparison group. A simple before-and-after comparison still contains seasonality, promotions and changes in other channels. With small samples, use VTCs to guide investigation rather than to justify a large budget transfer.

Consent choices, browser restrictions, device changes and collection failures affect visibility. Chrome should not be described as having universally removed third-party cookies. Server-side collection also does not automatically override consent or platform limits. Treat VTCs as one piece of evidence alongside business records and experiments.

Keep marketing reporting consistent

Use consistent metric definitions and reporting periods when reviewing results. See NeX-Ray’s supported integrations and reporting features, or start for free.
