Digital Marketing Strategy: Connect Goals, Channels and Budget

A digital marketing strategy connects a business goal and a customer task to channels, content, budget and evaluation. It does not require launching SEO, advertising, social media and email at once. Treat channel roles as hypotheses, then choose what the team can deliver and measure responsibly.
Define the goal, success unit and constraints
“Increase inquiries” is incomplete without defining which inquiries the business can serve. Specify relevant locations, work scope and commercial conditions. If the goal is revenue, decide how confirmed purchases, cancellations and duplicates will be handled.
Record the deadline, available budget, production capacity and response workload. Where several objectives exist, distinguish the main decision from supporting observations. Google Ads campaign objectives illustrate choosing settings around an aim; selecting an objective does not itself produce a business outcome.
Research customer tasks and touchpoints
Investigate what customers research, which conditions they compare and who helps them decide. Combine sales questions, user conversations and observed search or website activity. Leave unobserved touchpoints unknown rather than treating a generic funnel as a factual journey.
GOV.UK’s user-needs guidance focuses on actual tasks and difficulties. A visitor comparing suppliers may watch a social demonstration, while a search visitor may still be learning the terminology. “Social is for awareness” and “search is for purchase” are working assumptions, not exclusive roles.
Compare channels as working hypotheses
This matrix offers possible roles, not a ranking of channels. Results depend on the audience, competition, content and operating conditions. Advertising review and delivery conditions matter; organic discovery and visibility also vary.
Channel | Possible customer task | Constraints to investigate |
|---|---|---|
Organic search | Answer a recurring question or compare conditions | Evidence, discovery and indexing, maintenance; no visibility guarantee |
Search advertising | Connect an expressed need to a relevant offer | Review, eligibility, bidding, budget and economics |
Social or video | Demonstrate a process or announce a relevant update | Rights, production and response capacity, reach conditions |
Email or messaging | Provide useful information to permitted contacts | Permission, opt-out, list quality and measurement |
More articles can also mean more maintenance and duplication. Continued posting does not ensure greater reach or sales. Select touchpoints that can be maintained, and document why others are deferred.
Connect each touchpoint to a useful next action
Connect each message to a destination that answers its promise. A cost-comparison post should lead to comparable conditions; a demonstration should lead to information about the demonstrated task. Let the reader choose a useful next step rather than requiring a consultation merely to obtain basic information.
Use the content format comparison to choose the material. A channel distributes information; an article, comparison sheet or video is an asset. Adapt the asset to its context instead of copying the same text into every destination.
Calculate costs with a defined outcome
The following fictional example assumes JPY120,000 in media spend, JPY30,000 in production and management, and 30 verified qualified leads in the same period. Production and management are counted once. These are teaching figures, not market rates or NeX-Ray results.
Item | Assumed value | Calculation or caution |
|---|---|---|
Media spend | JPY120,000 | Same evaluation period |
Production and management | JPY30,000 | Include once in total cost |
Qualified leads | 30 | Verify qualification and duplicates |
Media cost per qualified lead | JPY4,000 | 120,000 ÷ 30 |
Total cost per qualified lead | JPY5,000 | 150,000 ÷ 30 |
Measured events | 40 | Not equivalent to 30 outcomes or people |
A platform CPA and an internally calculated cost can differ because their definitions differ. To calculate new-customer acquisition cost, use verified new customers and corresponding costs, not the lead count. With no qualifying outcomes, a per-outcome cost cannot be calculated as zero.
Record measurement and attribution limits
Document the dates, host, language, region, channel definition, outcome unit and source. Do not add advertising clicks, GA4 sessions and inquiries into one total. Separate organic landing sessions from all-channel landings. The GA4 report reading guide explains how to interpret the reports.
GA4 attribution documentation describes allocating credit to touchpoints. Allocated credit alone does not establish how many outcomes would have disappeared without a channel. Consent, devices, domains and missing measurement can limit the observed journey.
Email opens also differ from reading. Mailchimp’s Apple Mail Privacy Protection guidance explains effects on open tracking. Treat opens as supporting information and define verified clicks and subsequent tasks separately.
Review allocation through bounded tests
A fixed 70–20–10 allocation, channel count or test duration is not necessary. Set the scope from the maintenance requirement, cost ceiling, available staff and observations needed for a decision.
Fictional review-plan field | Example |
|---|---|
Question | Can the business receive inquiries within its service scope? |
Comparison conditions | Same scope, language, region and number of days |
Hypothesis | Clearer service boundaries help visitors judge suitability |
Primary evaluation | Confirmed inquiries and qualification assessed separately |
Supporting observations | Exposure, clicks and starts remain separate series |
Budget and stopping | Cost ceiling, staff time and failure conditions |
Decision | Expand, maintain or defer with sample and seasonality limits |
A small before-and-after difference cannot establish channel superiority or causation. Record changes in the offer and season as well. Leave the next owner a clear question, responsible person, cost limit and review condition rather than an instruction to add more media.
