Public DMP (Open DMP)

A DMP that mainly handles data provided by third parties (third-party data). Its characteristic is that it supplements data you don't have and is easy to use for acquiring new customers.

Private DMP

A DMP that mainly handles first-party data collected with the consent of your own customers. It accumulates and analyzes behavioral data and purchase data from your own site. Its merit is that it can be optimized to fit your internal security standards and operating flows, making data governance easier to strengthen. Unlike a public DMP, which continuously purchases external data, it requires some initial investment but tends to be easier to keep costs down over the long term.

How a DMP Works

A DMP handles data in a rough flow of "collect," "integrate and analyze," and "apply (connect)."

  • Collect: gather data from various sources such as website browsing history, ad exposure data, and external statistical data.

  • Integrate and analyze: organize and integrate the gathered data, and group (segment) users along axes such as gender, age group, and interests.

  • Apply (connect): link the audience segments you created with an ad delivery system such as a DSP (Demand Side Platform), and deliver ads to the optimal targets.

In this way, rather than identifying individuals in detail, a DMP's strength lies in creating "groups (audiences) with similar attributes and interests" and applying them to ad delivery.

By linking the audience segments you created in a DMP with a DSP, you can deliver display ads tailored to customers' interests. This is the most representative scenario, the one a DMP is best at.

By using a public DMP's external data, you can grasp the attributes and behavior of segments you don't yet have a touchpoint with. Optimizing your ad strategy and audience segments based on this can lead to acquiring new customers.

3. Customer Understanding and Segment Analysis

By analyzing collected data along axes such as gender, age group, and behavior, you can grasp the tendencies of your customer base. It becomes material for visualizing which segments have what needs and for considering the direction of content planning and product development.

The Difference Between DMP and CDP

The one often compared with a DMP is the CDP (Customer Data Platform). Both share the point of centrally managing customer data, but their design philosophy and purpose differ.

Difference in the Data Handled

A DMP mainly handles highly anonymous third-party data and manages data at the level of "audience segments." A CDP, on the other hand, mainly handles first-party and zero-party data that includes personally identifiable information (PII) such as name, address, and purchase history, and manages data at the level of "each individual customer."

Difference in Purpose

A DMP places its emphasis on creating audience segments and delivering targeted ads. A CDP, by contrast, aims for deep understanding and personalization of each individual customer, and can centrally handle not only ads but also measures across multiple channels such as email, LINE, and app notifications.

How to Choose Between Them

In recent years, CDPs have come to have the ad-delivery functions that DMPs handled, and private DMPs and CDPs increasingly overlap in functionality. A CDP has a wider range of use cases, but if you limit the use to advertising, there are situations a DMP can fully handle. It is important to determine whether your challenge is "ad delivery for new acquisition" or "deep understanding and personalization of existing customers" and choose accordingly.
