Paid Search Management: A Weekly Optimization Checklist
April 21, 2026
Author: Shusaku Yosa
Improve search campaigns in this order: measurement, search terms, ad promise, landing page, then bidding and budget. Changing bids before checking those inputs can hide the real problem. Lower CPC or a higher Quality Score is not the final goal; useful inquiries, sales and profit are.
A weekly diagnostic sequence
Step | Question | Response to a problem |
|---|---|---|
Measurement | Are successful outcomes counted once, without missing events? | Investigate and separate reporting before and after a fix |
Search terms | Does the intent match the intended customer? | Categorize intent and review exclusion candidates |
Ads | Does the promise answer that intent? | Compare creative around a clear hypothesis |
Landing page | Are the answer, offer and next step clear? | Diagnose content, display and form issues separately |
Bidding and budget | Is the outcome and acceptable cost appropriate? | Revisit targets and allocation |
Search term reports do not necessarily expose every query. Combine the visible terms with inquiry quality and customer feedback. Before excluding a word, check whether the proposed exclusion could also remove relevant demand.
Diagnose a higher CPA: a fictional example
The figures below use equal-length periods and the same outcome definition. They are illustrative, not industry benchmarks. Currency is Japanese yen.
Measure | Period A | Period B |
|---|---|---|
Ad spend | ¥100,000 | ¥100,000 |
Clicks | 500 | 400 |
Successful inquiries | 20 | 8 |
CPC: spend divided by clicks | ¥200 | ¥250 |
CVR: inquiries divided by clicks | 4% | 2% |
CPA: spend divided by inquiries | ¥5,000 | ¥12,500 |
CPA rose 2.5 times. CPC increased 1.25 times, while CVR halved: ¥250 divided by 2% equals ¥12,500. Investigate measurement changes, query mix, device and geographic mix, and the relationship between the ad and page. Cutting bids immediately could reduce useful demand while leaving the underlying problem unresolved.
Use Quality Score as a diagnostic
Google describes Quality Score as a diagnostic tool. Expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience can indicate areas to investigate. The displayed score should not be treated as a simple multiplier in a bid-times-score auction formula.
Do not pursue a high score by writing broadly appealing claims that attract the wrong customer. Evaluate the dashboard measure alongside valid inquiries, sales opportunities and gross profit.
Document an improvement before applying it
Field | Fictional example |
|---|---|
Observation | Few mobile form starts become completed inquiries |
Hypothesis | Unnecessary required fields make completion difficult |
Change | Review which fields are genuinely necessary |
Primary measure | Valid inquiries and CPA |
Guardrail | Unsuitable inquiries and sales review effort |
Review point | The planned observation period and sufficient observations |
Also record the date, owner, affected campaign, previous configuration and rollback approach. Large simultaneous changes to creative, pages and bidding make attribution to a particular change difficult. Handle urgent tracking faults promptly, but keep normal improvement work organized around explicit hypotheses.
Account for small samples and delayed outcomes
In B2B, clicks can precede inquiries, opportunities and sales by weeks or months. A recent acquisition cohort has had less time to convert than an older one. Compare cohorts at the same age and distinguish pending opportunities from completed outcomes.
A weekly review should separate observed facts, unresolved questions and the next action. Avoid changing targets every day in response to a small number of outcomes. Review conversion lag and delivery conditions before deciding whether a change deserves more time, refinement or reversal.
