UTM Parameters: Naming Rules, URL Examples and GA4 Reporting

UTMパラメータとは?書き方・設定方法・GA4での確認手順をわかりやすく解説

UTM parameters add source and campaign information to a destination URL. They help classify acquisition in GA4; they do not directly count every link click. Consent, tagging and redirects can affect what reaches Analytics.

Agree on source, medium and campaign naming before building URLs. Inconsistent values split the same initiative into multiple reporting rows.

utm_campaign

utm_source_platform

utm_content

header_cta or image_a

utm_term

A manually supplied keyword or category

An agreed classification

Keep the three core fields consistent and add identifiers or placement information where useful. utm_term does not recover organic search queries. The official documentation currently identifies utm_creative_format and utm_marketing_tactic as not reported in GA4; do not promise a report field merely because a parameter name exists.

Values are case-sensitive, so choose a consistent convention. With advertising, check existing auto-tagging and integrations before adding manual values. A cpc medium alone does not force Paid Search classification; source and other rules matter. A custom medium such as qr may be Unassigned in the default channel group while remaining available for manual-medium analysis.

Build and test the URL

An illustrative URL is https://shop.example/offer?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=product_demo_2026q4&utm_content=header_cta. Replace the reserved example domain with your real destination.

Use ? for the first query and & for additional parameters. Do not add another ? to a URL that already has a query. Encode characters correctly and test short links, redirects and fragment handling.

Open the final link, verify the destination and values, then inspect collection through the appropriate debugging tools. After processing, review session manual source, medium and campaign in GA4. Add manual ad content or manual term to a supported report or exploration when needed.

Some page-path or landing-page dimensions remove UTM information from their displayed value. Check the corresponding campaign dimensions before concluding that collection failed. Clicks, sessions and successful outcomes remain different units and need not match exactly.

Avoid internal tagging and personal information

Acquisition UTMs on internal links can complicate attribution. They do not automatically start a new GA4 session, but internal CTA use is usually better measured with events and dedicated parameters.

Never put names, email addresses or phone numbers in UTMs. URLs can appear in browser history, logs and shared links. Also, private browsing does not necessarily bypass an internal-traffic filter: the connection can still use the same IP address.

Maintain a campaign registry

Record campaign ID, owner, destination, UTM values, placement, start date and test result. Check spelling, case, spaces, broken links and parameter loss before distribution. Reusing an old campaign identifier should be deliberate, not an accidental shortcut.

UTM tagging is only the acquisition part of measurement. Verify the path from arrival to a valid success event before comparing campaigns on business results.

Keep marketing reporting consistent

Use consistent metric definitions and reporting periods when reviewing results. See NeX-Ray’s supported integrations and reporting features, or start for free.
