Direct and reserved ad buying involves agreeing on placement conditions in advance. In Japanese marketing, the term jun-koukoku, sometimes translated literally as “pure advertising,” often refers to this kind of purchase. It does not automatically mean a fixed position, a fixed all-inclusive price or guaranteed sales. Evaluate the actual inventory, price and delivery commitments in the agreement.

Reservation and automation are separate dimensions

A deal can be negotiated directly or transacted programmatically. Inventory can be reserved or bought without a reservation. Pricing can be fixed or auction-based. IAB’s programmatic terminology distinguishes reserved and unreserved arrangements; automation is not synonymous with open-auction buying.

Examples

Common confusion

Reservation

Reserved inventory or purchases as available

Reservation does not guarantee sales

Pricing

Fixed total, fixed CPM or auction

Production may be charged separately

Guarantee

Period, volume or placement

These are not necessarily guaranteed together

Transaction

Direct negotiation or programmatic

A reserved deal can be automated

Compare the decision conditions

If the timing and location matter, establish whether the reservation meets those needs. If you want to change allocation as results arrive, check the flexibility of budgets, delivery and creative. The label alone does not settle the decision.

For a product announcement on a specific date, placement availability, approval and submission deadlines may be priorities. For ongoing lead generation, the ability to relate spend to valid inquiries may matter more. A reserved awareness placement should not be evaluated solely through short-term last-click CPA.

A rotating site placement is not a promise to appear in the same position every time. Guaranteed impressions and guaranteed viewable impressions are also different commitments. Match the wording in the media kit to the quotation before buying.

A fictional cost calculation

Suppose one million impressions cost ¥500,000 and creative production costs ¥100,000. Media-only CPM is ¥500,000 / 1,000,000 × 1,000 = ¥500. Total cost is ¥600,000, or ¥600 per thousand impressions including production. These Japanese-yen amounts are illustrative assumptions, not market prices.

Align tax and other cost assumptions

The quotation alone does not determine clicks or sales. If forecasting with assumed CTR or CVR, show multiple scenarios and the uncertainty. Forecast outcomes are not contractual guarantees.

Review delivery before renewal

First verify that the contracted delivery conditions were met. Then evaluate the purpose of the activity using defined periods and methods for reach, branded searches, inquiries or sales. Record concurrent marketing activity.

A rise in reported outcomes does not establish incremental advertising impact. Before renewing, identify which placement conditions, creative or measurement should change and resolve outstanding delivery or cost questions.
