Video advertising uses moving images, sound and text to communicate an offer. Start with the business objective, then choose the viewing context, format, creative and measurement plan. A view, an understood message and a purchase are different outcomes. A useful plan explains how each will be assessed.

Separate platform, placement and creative shape

YouTube and Instagram are distribution platforms. In-stream and in-feed describe placements. Vertical and landscape describe creative shapes. These are different decisions, and the same video can behave differently across them. Google’s video format documentation distinguishes viewing and billing conditions for formats such as skippable in-stream, in-feed and Shorts ads.

Measures to review

Before, during or after another video

What must be understood before the viewer moves on?

Reach, views, clicks and outcomes

Within a feed

Is the message and advertiser clear without sound?

Impressions, viewing and site visits

Short vertical video

Will interface controls obscure the product or text?

Viewing retention, visits and outcomes

A reserved premium placement

What exactly is guaranteed for the booked period?

Contract delivery, exposure and business results

Do not assume every format charges only when the entire video is watched. Review the selected format and bidding strategy before comparing cost per view or cost per thousand impressions.

Match the primary metric to the objective

Objective

Candidate primary measure

Supporting checks

Introduce the brand

Reach within the intended audience

Frequency, placement context and awareness research

Explain a workflow

Relevant page visits after exposure

Viewing time, questions and understanding

Generate inquiries

Valid inquiries and cost per inquiry

Visits, form completion and duplicate submissions

Drive purchases

Revenue, gross profit and new customers

Acquisition cost, returns and existing-customer share

A high completion rate does not establish comprehension or buying intent. Different platforms can count a view differently. Compare reporting windows, attribution windows and click-through versus view-through outcomes before drawing conclusions from similarly named metrics.

A fictional 15-second storyboard

This example promotes a fictional task-management service by showing how work gets an owner. The timing is an editorial starting point, not a universal creative benchmark.

Match the next action to the destination

Only demonstrate capabilities the product actually offers. Verify permission and evidence for testimonials, numerical comparisons and before-and-after claims. If testing two openings, keep the destination and audience conditions comparable so that the opening is the intended difference.

Production checks before launch

  • Confirm current platform requirements for landscape, vertical and square assets.
  • Check readability on a small screen, including captions and interface overlays.
  • Verify rights for music, images, people and trademarks.
  • Make the advertiser and next action clear; repeat the same promise on the destination page.
  • Test campaign links and outcome events, including failed submissions, reloads and duplicates.

Diagnose the next change

If viewers leave early, review the context and opening. If they watch but do not visit, examine the reason to act and the call to action. If visits do not become useful outcomes, inspect the destination’s promise, loading behavior and form flow.

Record the dates, weekday mix, audience, budget and format for every comparison. A handful of purchases is weak evidence for declaring a winning creative. Use a planned observation period and a business-based cost threshold. Finally, outcomes attributed to people who saw an ad do not, by themselves, prove that the ad caused additional sales.
