Remarketing vs. Retargeting: Terminology and Targeting Limits

リマーケティングとリターゲティングの違いとは?設定方法まとめ

Retargeting usually means advertising to people who have interacted with a business before. Remarketing is sometimes used as a synonym and sometimes more broadly, including email and other follow-up activity. There is no universal rule that makes one term exclusively a cookie-based method and the other exclusively an email method.

For implementation, specify the data source, audience, channel and delivery boundaries. An agreed specification is more useful than a debate about labels.

Compare the concepts without confusing them with settings

Operational question

Retargeting

Remarketing

Re-engagement, or the same meaning as retargeting

Can delivery extend beyond previous visitors?

Google has updated terminology related to remarketing to “your data.” A mismatch between an older article and a current interface is therefore not proof that a capability disappeared. Check the current help page and the settings available for the actual campaign.

An audience signal is not necessarily a targeting boundary

A campaign can accept an audience without limiting delivery to it. In Performance Max, audience signals help guide optimization, and ads may reach people outside those signals. Calling the campaign “retargeting” does not change that behavior.

Size and timing

Is the group eligible, and how quickly do updates apply?

If a project requires strict member-only delivery or the exclusion of every existing customer, first assess whether the platform can meet that requirement. Matching limitations and update delays may prevent an absolute guarantee. Escalate a requirement the configuration cannot satisfy instead of quietly treating it as a preference.

Match the message to the earlier interaction

Consider a fictional business-software provider. Someone who viewed pricing may need an explanation of fees and implementation responsibilities. Someone who downloaded a guide may benefit from a comparison worksheet. An existing customer may need onboarding rather than another acquisition discount.

These groups should not automatically receive identical ads for the same duration. The buying cycle, product availability and previous response determine whether a message is still useful. If the group is too small for delivery, combine stages thoughtfully rather than assuming that finer segmentation is always better.

Email introduces another set of operational decisions. Establish the permitted purpose, recipient preferences, unsubscribe handling and treatment of contacts already speaking with sales. Having an advertising audience does not by itself authorize a marketing-email program.

Use a specification both teams can understand

  • Audience: the exact qualifying action and data source.
  • Window: the period after the action, with a reason for the choice.
  • Exclusions: completed buyers, active opportunities and other ineligible groups.
  • Boundary: restricted delivery or permission to expand into prospecting.
  • Message: the missing information and the destination page.
  • Outcome: the successful action and the qualification rule.
  • Accountability: owner, review date and location of the change log.

For example, “people who visited pricing without submitting a successful inquiry” is more useful than “warm audience.” State how successful submission is measured, what happens after an inquiry and whether the available exclusions cover that event.

Evaluate delivery rather than the campaign name

Review spend, eligible audience size and meaningful outcomes by interaction group. Check the reporting period before interpreting frequency. Frequency controls vary by platform and campaign type, so do not assume the same cap can be applied everywhere.

Likewise, a low reported CPA does not show how many additional sales the campaign created. Returning visitors may already have strong purchase intent, and multiple channels may claim the same conversion. Keep attributed outcomes separate from any experimental estimate of incremental impact.

Once the terminology is clear, use the retargeting implementation guide to build inclusion, exclusion and measurement rules. The aim is an auditable setup that matches the brief, regardless of which shorthand a team prefers.
